Tonight was the last episode of SG-1. I won't comment on the episode itself, so don't worry about spoilers. (Though now certain movie pictures make sense)
Stargate SG-1 has been on the air for 10 seasons. Ten long and wild years. I first saw the show in 1997, during its first season. I think I had heard about the show and wanted to see it, but we didn't get Showtime. The summer it aired, I was in AIT at Ft. Sam Houston. We had a free evening, and I somehow was able to watch tv in the Drill Sergeant's office. I found Showtime, and watched an episode. I can't remember what it was, but I know it intrigued me. I didn't get to see another one for well over another year, when I moved down south, and the show had entered syndication. Sean and I were quickly drawn into the show and the adventures of Jack, Sam, Daniel and Teal'c. When we moved and changed our cable packages, we chose Showtime as one of the movie channels so that we could see the show when it first aired. We were happy when SciFi acquired the show, because while it meant commercials, we didn't have a firm reason to keep Showtime. (Though I think we still did)
I've fairly immersed myself in the show. I can name most of the episodes or explain the plot after viewing about 10-30 seconds of the show. I started reading the fanfiction, which was a perilous journey filled with pitfalls by itself. (Really, I've been greatly spoiled by the quality of L&C fic).
But the episodic journey is now at an end. It's been a good decade. It's sad to see the show come to an end. Sean says he was sad to see it end, too. Most shows, when they're cancelled or they end, you don't get to spend enough time to put an emotional interest into it. But ten years, you get drawn in, and it becomes a part of your life. It's like a good friend has gone away. No longer can you just pop in and say hi whenever you want. You have to wait for a visit, or in this case, two movies.
Thank you, SG1, for being a part of our lives. I look forward to the next visit.
